Toothpaste
Toothpaste is a complex multi-phase semi-solid system composed of abrasives, humectants, surfactants, active functional ingredients, thickeners, preservatives, flavorings, and deionized water. Its core processing and product performance requirements include moderate viscosity, stable paste consistency, excellent water retention, uniform dispersion of abrasives, smooth extrusion from tubes, no water separation or hardening during shelf storage, and a comfortable brushing texture. Cellulose derivatives HEC and CMC are the most widely used dual thickening-stabilizing agent in toothpaste formulations, serving as key rheology modifiers to maintain system stability and optimize the sensory experience of brushing.

CMC (Carboxymethyl Cellulose)
CMC is the traditional primary thickener for toothpaste, and is classified as a water-soluble anionic cellulose ether. It's suitable for Cost-effective daily basic toothpaste, whitening toothpaste, and children's toothpaste and formulations with high loading of inorganic abrasives
Core Functions of CMC in Toothpaste
- Thickening & Shaping:It builds continuous gel networks in aqueous systems to form a uniform paste texture, prevents toothpaste from flowing freely out of the tube, and maintains a firm standing shape after extrusion.
- Anti-syneresis & Storage Stability: Its strong water-binding capacity locks free water within the formula, effectively avoiding oil-water stratification, water bleeding, and abrasive sedimentation during long-term storage at high or low temperatures.
- Dispersion Aid for Abrasives: It wraps silica, calcium carbonate, and other abrasive particles to reduce particle agglomeration, ensures even distribution of cleaning ingredients, and prevents gritty lumps during brushing.
- Mild Film-forming Property: It forms a thin lubricating film on tooth surfaces during brushing, delivering a smooth mouthfeel without irritation to the oral mucosa.
HEC (Hydroxyethyl Cellulose)
HEC is a non-ionic cellulose ether, often compounded with CMC to upgrade toothpaste performance. Its suitable for functional toothpaste like anti-cavity fluoride toothpaste, antibacterial sensitive teeth toothpaste, herbal medicinal toothpaste, and high-humectant transparent gel toothpaste.
Advantages of HEC in Toothpaste
- Excellent Compatibility with Ionic Raw Materials
HEC shows good tolerance to cationic antibacterial agents (cetylpyridinium chloride, chlorhexidine), fluoride salts, and cationic surfactants; no flocculation or viscosity collapse occurs when adding functional active ingredients.
- Superior Salt Resistance & Temperature Stability
HEC retains stable rheology in high humectant (glycerin, sorbitol) and high-salt environments; it is less prone to viscosity drop during heating in production or seasonal temperature changes.
- Improved Extrusion Performance & Silky Texture
It provides pseudoplastic rheology: high viscosity at rest for shape retention, and low viscosity under shear for smooth, effortless extrusion from toothpaste tubes.
- Enhanced Foam Stability
It synergizes with foaming surfactants to generate fine, dense foam that lasts longer during brushing, improving the overall cleaning experience.
